Two-third
of all U.S. households have air conditioners, whose energy consumption amount to 5% of all the electricity produced in the
U.S. for all purposes, at a cost to homeowners of over $11 billion. That amount of electricity results in the release
of roughly 100 million tons of carbon dioxide per year, or an average for homes with air-conditioning of a little less than
two tons per year. Seventy-five percent of new homes are being outfitted with central air conditioning systems, according
to Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration News.
"A switch
to high-efficiency air conditioners and implementation of measures to reduce cooling load (motors) in homes can reduce this
energy use by 20-50%." (Consumer Guide to Home Energy Savings)
